How GPA Is Calculated
GPA is not a simple average of grades. It is a credit-weighted average of grade points. Honors/AP weighting, transfer credits and failed courses all change the result.
Unweighted GPA
A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0; GPA = sum of grade points times credits divided by total credits.
Whether pass/fail and PE courses count depends on the school.
Weighted GPA
Many schools add 0.5 or 1.0 for AP/honors, but caps and formulas differ.
A weighted GPA is not directly comparable across schools; use each school's conversion table.
FAQ
What percentage is a 3.5 GPA?
There is no universal conversion; on a 4.0 scale 3.5 is often 87 to 90 percent, but schools differ.
Is weighted GPA always higher?
Only if you do well in weighted courses; low grades in them still pull the GPA down.
